NowWeBike - The European
Cross-Border Cycling Tour

A Team of Volunteer Cyclists will ride on a Tour to Raise Awareness of Physical Inactivity Time Bomb

A recent study commissioned by ISCA and conducted by Cebr shows that "doing nothing" is costing the European economy about €80 billion per year and physical inactivity is the 4th leading risk factor for global mortality.

That is why ISCA and its partners decided to extend the NowWeMOVE campaign's efforts towards moving people by organising a year-round calendar of events.

The NowWeBike European cross-border cycling tour is one of the new events on the NowWeMOVE calendar. On 24 July 2015, a team of recreational cyclists started a 2700km journey extending along EuroVelo routes, passing through 13 countries, and engaging partners, the press and the public in side events in each country along the route. The event culminated on 9 September 2015 in a final celebration in Brussels, the "European capital". NowWeBike's objective is to encourage participation in sport and exercise by attracting citizens to be a part of a pan-European activity.

NowWeBike - the European cross-border cycling tour is supporting the promotion of the European Week of Sport #BeActive.

Main objective

The main objective of NowWeBike tour is to raise awareness about growing inactivity pandemic amongst Europeans, as 1 in 4 adults across Europe is currently physically inactive, as well as are 4 out of 5 adolescents, shows study "Inactivity Time Bomb" published in June this year.

Why cycling?

Cycling has great potential to communicate the important cross-sector aspect of the NowWeMOVE campaign: at the very same time, it is a mode of transportation, recreation, tourism and sport competition. Cycling can be a key driver to showcase the many ways in and outside of sport that people can become more active in their everyday lives.

Side events

NowWeBike is not just about one team travelling from A to B. Their route to Brussels will be an interactive one, offering the public, the press and organisations a variety of ways to be part of the event. From "come and try" activities including BikeYoga, to active sightseeing tours and cultural visits, to press conferences, and city-to-city pro-am (professionals riding alongside amateurs) events, NowWeBike's side events are designed to appeal to an array of tastes, abilities and professional interests.
